چکیده

PURPOSE The present study aimed to measure the thickness of the subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) at the site of the surgical incision for axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and to record potential anatomical variations in the medial cutaneous nerve of the arm (MCNA), the intercostobrachial nerve (ICBN), the lateral thoracic vein (LTV), the lateral thoracic artery (LTA) and the pectoral muscle pedicle (PMP), considering that some details of the anatomy of these structures within the axilla are still unclear. METHODS A prospective study was conducted in 100 consecutive patients with breast cancer who underwent ALND as part of surgical treatment. The anatomy of the dissected axilla was video recorded. RESULTS The SAT thickness ranged from 8 mm to 60 mm, with an average thickness of 25.9 mm. A positive correlation was observed between the SAT thickness and the body mass index (BMI) of the evaluated patients (r = 0.68; p < 0.0001). The MCNA was the anatomical structure that was least commonly observed in the axilla (22% of cases), while the PMP was the most constant element, identified in 100% of cases. All of the studied anatomical structures observed within the axilla showed variation in at least one of the aspects analyzed, i.e., the point of entry and exit, path, number and location of divisions or branches. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated wide variation in thickness of the SAT overlying the axilla and identified the existence of broad normative anatomical variation of the axilla.

Evaluation of Anatomical Variations of Paranasal Sinuses in Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) of Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Comparing with Normal Individuals

Introdouction: An exact knowledge of the anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses (PNS) is critical for surgeons performing endoscopic sinus surgery and for radiologists involved in making preoperative evaluations. An important aspect is the determination of correlation between the anatomical variations of PNS and the presence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CR). Cone-beam computed tomograph...

Anatomical Variations of Circle of Willis in 57 Human Brains

Purpose: The circle of willis is responsible for blood supply of brain, which may suffer from anatomical variations. These disturbances can lead to aneurysm or even arterial rupture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical structure of the cerebral arteries forming the circle of willis in adult cadavers. Also, cerebral versus non- cerebral versus non-cerebral arterial walls wer...

Anatomical Variations of Vertebral Artery

Introduction: Vertebral arteries arise from the root of the neck as the first branches from the superior-posterior aspect of the subclavian arteries. They ascend the neck to enter the cranial cavity and supply blood to the brain. Methods: A total of 20 cadavers (in 10 years) were dissected for the study of variations in the origin of the vertebral artery. This study was conducte...

Research Paper: Anatomic variations of paranasal sinuses and nasal cavities from CBCT images in the Iranian population

Abstract Introduction: external nasal walls are an important factor in the drainage or obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex, therfor anatomical variations in the nasal cavity can elevate the risk of pathological sinus conditions. The aim of this study is to evaluate anatomical variations of paranasal sinuses and nasal cavities using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and ...

Relationship between Anatomical Variations of Sinonasal Area and Maxillary Sinus Pneumatization

Introduction: Maxillary sinuses are among the largest paranasal sinuses with various shapes and volumes. The dimensions and volumes of maxillary sinuses play an important role in the surgical treatment plan. The higher levels of pneumatization of alveolar bone lead to the increase of odontogenic sinusitis which cause problems in dental implantation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate...
